Best Antivirus Firewall Software

Question by Leon Wu: How do you unblock an ip without a firewall software?
Recently I installed ZoneAlarm Firewall and for some reason, it often causes problems showing “This Page cannot be displayed.” I did not block access to any websites though I may have accidentally blocked my own. Currently ZoneAlarm is not installed on my pc so i have no firewall, is there a way to fix this? As well, others are no longer able to connect to my ip. What factors might prevent me from allowing others to connect with my IP? (I.E. for Gaming). For further details, you may contact me at bqm1234@yahoo.com. Thanks

Typically the install of ZoneAlarm creates problems like this by adding registry entries and other flat files. If you uninstalled it from Add/Remove programs it still has several components loaded. You can manually remove entries from your registry, locate and delete all remaining files, go into internet options and set all security and privacy settings to their defaults, go into the startup list and remove/verify entries, and if you are using Windows 9x possibly uninstall and reinstall Windows TCP/IP components. But this will take more than a few hours, it may be simpler to just backup, format and reinstall windows.

Question by nanookadenord: Is a software firewall really needed when using a Hardware router w/ firewall?
Okay, I was able to get my ping request issue worked out and I am now completely stealthed on the internet. It’s like I’m not even there.

So my next question is, do I really need a software firewall? I am currently using Windows own firewall, but many people say that it’s not what I should be using.

I have tried other software firewalls, but they get rather annoying. Once I set it up, I don’t want to have to mess with it much. It seems like everyday I have to allow firefox to connect or IE. My wife absolutely hates when I have one running other then the Windows one.

The ones I have tried are ZA free/Pro, Comodo and AOLs new one. Everything else I looked at seem very complicated.

So do I really need a software firewall?

You don’t REALLY need one, but if you want to keep one that would be fine. It is possible to get past the router, the software firewall is just another layer of protection. I don’t have a software firewall and am behind a router, I have never had any problems.
